This painting became a starting point for delving into my family history. Not having known my father personally, it prompted me to explore my roots more deeply. I decided to enlarge and recreate the image for several reasons. I wanted to engage aesthetically with my father's visual remnants and preserve the deteriorating original photo through painting.
During my research trip to the Amazon in 2022, I brought the painting with me, planning to take it back to Serra Pelada, where my father had worked as a gold miner. At the site, I unrolled the painting by the pit and took a moment to reflect. Throughout my journey, the painting became a companion, evoking personal memories and shaping an ethnographic method I called «Roll Out.»
This method was simple yet effective: rolling out the painting at various locations, which attracted curiosity and initiated conversations. These interactions allowed me to connect with locals and gain insights into their lives and the region.
Thus, the painting became a tool for personal reflection and a means of sociocultural research and intercultural exchange, helping me understand the Amazon's landscape and its people's stories better.
